In recent decades, the relationship between patients and physicians has been evolving from the traditional paternalistic relationship in which physicians made choice for patients, to a more equal relationship of shared decision making in which physicians provide information and counseling that allows competente adult patients to make their own choices. The process by which physician and patients make decisions together, is summarized in the concept "informed consent"...In this process, the physician educates the patient and her family and the patient chooses treatment based on reasonable medical alternatives.
