Project to reduce lead pollution and to enhance public health in Jamaica

Reports on a project that studied the Red Pond area of North West St. Catherine, an area believed to be of high risk due to exposure of the local population to lead in the environment. The project aims to implement an environmental clean up programme in the exposed areas of Red Pond District and to create green areas within the community in collaboration with the residents; educate the community using community wardens as well as through the media for island-wide public education; and to detrermine the blood/lead levels of children and the lead concentration in air, water and soil in the Red Pond District before and after the implementation of the projects.
