El sur del departamento de Amazonas, ubicado al norte del Perú, fue ocupado entre 800 D.C. y 1470 D.C. por poblaciones pertenecientes a la tradición chachapoya. Diferentes misiones arqueológicas y espeleológicas, con el fin de explorar y de topografiar las redes subterráneas de este departamento, han permitido dar cuenta de la presencia de numerosos restos de huesos humanos en el interior de varias cavernas, lo que confirma la utilización prehispánica de las cuevas como lugar de sepultura.
The south of department of Amazonas, located in the North of Peru, was occupied between 800 A.C. and 1470 A.C. by populations belonging to the tradition chachapoya. Various archaeological and caving missions, aiming at investigating and mapping the subterranean networks of this department, allowed to bring to the light the presence of numerous human bones inside several caves which give evidence of the pre-Hispanic use of caves as place of burial.
