Effect of point-of-care early infant diagnosis on antiretroviral therapy initiation and retention of patients

HIV/AIDS is a leading cause of infant mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite significant improvements in preventing vertical transmission, in the 21 Global Plan priority countries in sub-Saharan Africa, over 100 000 infants are infected with HIV annually and only 50% access life-saving antiretroviral therapy [2]. If untreated, up to 50% of HIV-infected infants die within 2 years of life, with mortality being high in the first few months of life. Improving access to pediatric treatment is essential to achieving the UNAIDS global HIV 90–90–90 goals by 2030
